A good digital marketing plan in 2026 is smaller and more disciplined than the long lists of earlier years. Pick the few channels where your customers actually are, make each one measurable, and follow the rules each platform now enforces. For most small and mid-sized businesses that means clear, well-sourced pages that search engines and AI assistants can quote; one or two social platforms done consistently; email that meets Gmail's sender requirements; an accurate Google Business Profile if you serve a local area; and tracking that works even when visitors decline cookies.
Key takeaways
- DataReportal's Digital 2026 Global Overview puts social media user identities at 5.66 billion and internet users at 6.04 billion, with online adults spending well over 2½ hours a day on social and video platforms combined.
- Since 1 February 2024, senders of more than 5,000 emails a day to Gmail must authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, support one-click unsubscribe, and keep spam rates below 0.10% (never reaching 0.30%), according to Google.
- Google Business Profile is only for businesses with a physical location customers can visit or that travel to customers; virtual offices do not qualify, and violating the guidelines can lead to suspension.
- Search now includes AI answers, which Google reports in Search Console, so pages should answer questions directly and be easy to cite.
- Earlier lists of "tricks" have faded; fundamentals (clear content, honest reviews, consistent profiles, measurement) last.
What does a digital marketing plan need in 2026?
Think in channels, each with one job and one measure.
| Channel | Its job | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Search and AI answers | Be found when people ask a question | Impressions and clicks by page, enquiries from organic search |
| Social media | Stay visible and build familiarity | Reach and replies on the one or two platforms you use, plus enquiries that mention them |
| Keep in touch with people who asked for it | Delivery, opens and clicks, replies, unsubscribes | |
| Local profile | Be accurate where people search nearby | Calls, direction requests and profile views |
| Paid search | Reach people ready to act, quickly | Cost per enquiry, search terms, conversions |
| Measurement | Know what is working | Enquiries by source, tracked as events |
If you cannot name the job and the measure for a channel, pause it until you can.
How should you approach search and AI answers?
Treat them as one job: publish pages that answer a specific question better than anyone else, name who wrote them, and keep facts current. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report in Search Console, and has offered Search Generative AI performance reports since June 2026. For the method, see SEO content in 2026, How to get your business cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and Measuring AI search. Our SEO services page describes what we do.
Which social platforms are worth your time?
The audience is large: DataReportal's Digital 2026 Global Overview counts 5.66 billion social media user identities, noting that these are accounts and may not equal unique people, and says online adults spend more than an hour a day on networks such as Facebook and X, and well over 2½ hours a day once video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok are included. Size does not mean every platform suits you. Choose one or two where your buyers already spend time (for a business-to-business service, often LinkedIn), post consistently, reply to every comment, and link back to a page that answers a real question. Our social media marketing page explains how we help.
What are the rules for email marketing now?
Google's requirements for senders to Gmail personal accounts have applied since 1 February 2024 to anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day. They must:
- set up SPF and DKIM authentication, and DMARC for the sending domain;
- support one-click unsubscribe in marketing and subscribed messages, with a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message body;
- keep the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.10%, and avoid ever reaching 0.30%.
The same practices help any sender reach the inbox. Only email people who asked to hear from you, and keep a record of their consent.
How do you handle a Google Business Profile?
If customers visit you or you travel to them, a Business Profile is often your most visible local asset. Google's guidelines say:
- A profile needs a physical location customers can visit, or a business that travels to customers. A rented mailing address or virtual office is not eligible, and an office in a co-working space must be staffed by your own team during business hours.
- The name should reflect your real-world business name as used consistently on your storefront and website. Extra information in the name is not permitted and could lead to suspension.
- Addresses must be precise and may not contain URLs or keywords, and each location gets one page.
Google can change or remove business information, and can suspend access, if the guidelines are broken. Keep your profile's name, address and phone number the same as on your website.
How do you measure it when visitors decline cookies?
Agree on a few key events, for example a form submission, a phone click and a booked call, and track them from the start. Google's consent mode adapts tags to a visitor's cookie choice: when consent is denied, tags do not store cookies and instead send cookieless pings. We explain the event plan in A GA4 event plan for lead generation and the cookie question in Analytics when visitors decline cookies.
What happened to the older lists?
Earlier posts on this site gathered the "styles", "trends" and "checklists" of 2017 and 2018. Tactics came and went; the parts that lasted are the fundamentals above. A list is only useful if each item has a job and a measure, which is why the plan starts with the table.
A quarterly checklist
- For each channel, state its job and its measure.
- Review search clicks by page, and update your five most-visited pages.
- Check that your Google Business Profile name, address, phone and hours match your website.
- Check that email authentication passes and that unsubscribes work in one click.
- Review reviews and reply to each one; see Customer reviews in 2026.
- Confirm that your key events still record enquiries after any site change.
- Stop one activity that has no measurable job.

FAQ
How many channels should a small business use?
As few as you can run well: usually search, one or two social platforms, and email. Add paid search when you have a page that converts and a budget you can measure.
Do we need social media at all?
If your buyers use it, a consistent presence helps people recognise you, and it gives you something to link to when you answer questions. If they do not, put the time into search and email.
Do the Gmail rules apply to us if we send fewer than 5,000 emails a day?
The formal bulk-sender requirements are written for senders above that volume, but SPF, DKIM, DMARC, an easy unsubscribe and low spam rates help any sender reach the inbox.
Can we use a virtual office address on Google Business Profile?
No. Google's guidelines say a rented mailing address or virtual office is not eligible, and a co-working office must be staffed by your own team during business hours.
How do we know which channel brings enquiries?
Track key events (form, phone click, booking) and ask new enquirers how they found you. Compare the two every quarter.
